Gereka Nazarene Urban Clinic Opens NEW Maternity Ward
On Friday, 31 July 2026, government leaders, Christian Health Services Papua New Guinea (CHSPNG), Church of the Nazarene Health Ministries, the National Fisheries Authority (NFA), healthcare professionals, development partners and members of the Gereka community gathered for the opening ceremony of a new facility set to transform access to quality maternity care in the area.
The World Health Organization notes that nearly all maternal and newborn deaths are preventable when women have timely access to skilled health professionals in well-equipped facilities before, during and after childbirth. Expanding quality maternity services remains one of the most effective ways to protect the health and wellbeing of mothers and newborns — and strengthening these services is a national priority under Papua New Guinea’s National Health Plan 2021–2030.
Paddling towards Hope: EDEN Mass Training Inspires Change in Wowobo Village-Kikori District
The audience sat quietly as six mothers climbed into a makeshift canoe. With urgency on their faces, they began paddling through an imaginary waterway while a heavily pregnant woman sat in the middle, crying out in pain as labour progresses unabated.
The paddling action by the mother was vigorous as they tried harder to reach medical help before it was too late. A plight of all mothers’ struggles in a remote setting like this dramatized scenario.
Presented only as a drama to officially open the EDEN Community Mass Training, the scene reflected a harsh reality faced by the people of Wowobo Village in Ward 19 of Kikori District, Gulf Province.
For decades, mothers, children, and sick patients from this remote community have travelled long distances by canoe through swampy waterways and river channels to access some form of basic health services.
